The capital of the Mughal Empire shifted over time, but the most well-known and significant capital was Fatehpur Sikri, built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. It was situated near Agra in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. The city was built as a tribute to Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who had blessed Akbar with a son.
The city was known for its imposing architecture, consisting of several palaces, harem quarters, courtyards, and monumental gateways. It served as the center of Mughal power for about 14 years until drought forced the emperor to move the capital to Lahore.
The Mughal Empire also had Delhi as its capital for several centuries until it was sacked by Nadir Shah in 1739. The capital was subsequently moved to Agra and later to Lahore before finally being settled in Delhi by Emperor Shah Jahan in the mid-17th century. Delhi remained the capital of the Mughal Empire until its downfall in the mid-19th century.
